We're honored to have partnered with The Home School Room again this Fall, in offering enrichment programs to the home schooling families in our community.

 

The Home School Room -Matthews is located at 2920 Old Monroe Rd. Suite B Matthews, NC 28104.

 

Please read through this page in it's entirety to best understand the sewing classes specific to the Matthews location.  Also, please review the policy paragraph located at the bottom of this page, as the tuition policy is slightly different than the policies offered at our sewing studio.

Learn Your Machine (Pre-req)

Monday, September 7, 2015               10:15am-12:15am

 

Fashion I - (Beginner's Sewing): Mondays @ 10:15-11:25

Fashion II - (Level II) Mondays @ 12:45-1:55 

Classes will be held once weekly on Monday mornings from September 14th-December 14th, consisting of 12 weeks of sewing instruction.  If classes are full, we can add your child's name to the waiting list. 

Class Descriptions

 
Note: All Level I students must attend the pre-requisite "Learn Your Machine" class.  This 2 hour class introduces students to sewing safety, parts of the machine, how to thread the machine and prepare to sew.  Students will practice sewing different stitches and seams using paper and felt.  This pre-req is offered once a month, allowing new students to enter the program throughout the year.  Once students attend this class, they are welcome to join any of the available Level I classes.  Dates + Times listed below following our weekly sewing schedule.
 
 
Learn Your Machine (Pre-requisite Class)
Required for all new students entering the sewing enrichment program for the 2014-2015 school year. Students will learn sewing safety, sewing machine basics, perform simple sewing exercises, and complete a simple useful project to take home. This 2 hour session is available at on:

Fashion Club Level 1

Ages: 7+ 

Cost of Class: $180 per semester

Materials: Sewing Machine and Sewing Tools are provided for each student.  Students are required to purchase their fabrics for various projects and will be provided with their materials list on first day of class.
 
Class Description: In this class students will learn the basics of sewing, as well as, how to operate and navigate a sewing machine. They will also begin to learn how to layout, read and understand basic patterns. This journey will teach each student how to use basic sewing tools, which stitch to use for a given application and why. Students will also learn how to properly pin and cut fabric, and how to straight stitch and zigzag.
 
I use the Kids Can Sew & Fashion Design® curriculum. These lessons start with Level 1 and progress until the student is ready to use commercial patterns. I encourage students to experiment with the skills they have learned and to exercise their creativity during their lesson time. This is not just a project-producing class, but a skill-developing opportunity.  All students will have the opportunity to participate in a Fashion Show in late Spring.
 
A $110 non-refundable deposit is required at the time of registration to reserve a seat in class. Your deposit will be applied to your full tuition cost.  Remaining tuition is due by August 15th.  Seats are filled on a first come basis.  If all seats are full, student’s name will be added to a waiting list.
 
 
 Fashion Club Level 2

Ages: 7+

Student Requirements: $50 Year 2 Workbook Fee
 Machine Rental: $5 per week or bring your own for FREE! 
 
Materials: Sewing Machine and Sewing Tools are provided for each student.  Students are required to purchase their fabrics for various projects and will be provided with their materials list on first day of class.
 
Class Description: Fashion Club II reinforces concepts learned in Fashion Club I, as well as introduces, inset sleeves, gathering, drawstring waist, double stitching, baste stitching and much more.  They will continue learning how to layout, read, and interpret sewing patterns and instructions. Upon completion of this class students should be comfortable using commercial patterns.  I encourage students to experiment with the skills they have learned and to exercise their creativity during their lesson time. This is not just a project-producing class, but a skill-developing opportunity.  Students will continue adding to their sewing notebooks.  All students will have the chance to participate in the Fashion Show in late Spring.  They will also be awarded a Fashion II Certificate of Completion upon completion of their Year 2 Workbook.
 
Projects Include: Sport Shirt (long sleeve), Sport Shirt (short sleeve), Sport Shorts, Sport Pants, Capris, Tank Top, Ruffle Skirt.

Pre-Requisite: Sewing Fun (Learn Your Machine - One Day Class) 
 
Materials: Sewing Machine and Sewing Tools are provided for each student.  Students are required to purchase their fabrics for various projects and will be provided with their materials list on first day of class. 
 
Class Description: In Quilting Club students will learn general quilting terminology and proper use of the most common quilt notions.  We will cover proper and safe rotary cutting techniques.  Students will also learn how to read and interpret pattern cutting instructions.  We will focus on the various ways of assembling “squares” to create “blocks”.   Students will become comfortable with using the ¼” seam allowance on their machine.  They will learn strip and traditional piecing, seam matching techniques, pressing techniques, and how-to “square up” blocks.  Students will be required to complete the “Learn Your Machine” class prior to beginning Quilting Club. 
 
A $110 non-refundable deposit is required at registration to reserve a seat in class.  Your deposit will be applied to your full tuition cost.  Remaining tuition is due by August 15th.  Seats are filled on a first come basis.  If all seats are full, student’s name will be added to a waiting list.
 
 
Costume Club - (Unavailable at this time)
 
 
Ages: 7th - 12th grade
Cost: $225 per semester

Class Description: Costume Club is intended to introduce students to the principles of theatrical design.  A professional costume designer is expected to visualize a character as described in a script, sketch a model of their vision, and bring that vision to life.  As a class we will select numerous short excerpts from classic novels such as; Oliver Twist, Huck Finn, etc.  Each student will be required to make sketches of the characters as he or she sees fit. The class as a whole will then discuss and agree upon one of the highlighted character descriptions and move forward with the recreation of that chosen character’s clothing.  Students will be required to choose a color palette and historically accurate textiles.  The remaining portion of the semester will be used to bring their design to life.  Each costuming student will be encouraged to participate In the Spring Fashion Show to showcase their original design.

You can reserve your seat by using the paypal button below.  We will be in contact with you within 48 hours of your registration.  There are additional student registration forms required for parents to complete for both Thimble Bee's Sewing School and The Home School Room. Enrichment Program Policies

Please view our studio policies page to review our policy in it's entirety.  We apologize, but monthly payment options are NO longer available for students attending our enrichment programs through schools or other organizations. When registering, parents should realize this is a semester commitment. If you are unable to commit for the entirety of this class, please wait until a more ideal time in your schedule to sign up.  Students will be allowed ONE makeup class per semester.  Payment and registration forms are required in FULL before the first day of class.  If you have any questions regarding our policy with our enrichment program attendees, please feel free to call Jennifer at (704) 443-1597(704) 443-1597.
